Colorado:

Government Should Stand Down
in Medical Marijuana Battle

America Agrees: Allow Doctors to Prescribe Medical Marijuana

(4/02/01) – The federal government should allow people to buy and sell marijuana for medical purposes.  That's the sentiment in Colorado, according to an exclusive poll conducted by SurveyUSA for television station KUSA (Denver).

Right now, it is legal to use marijuana in the state of Colorado as long as a physician prescribes it. However, according to federal law, it is not legal to buy or sell marijuana in the United States for any reason.

We asked 500 adults in Colorado: Should the federal government allow people to buy and sell marijuana for medical purposes? Or not?

·        By a margin of more than 2 to 1, adults in Colorado say the government should allow the purchase and sale of marijuana for medical purposes.

·        Younger adults are more likely than older adults to support the buying and selling of medical marijuana. Adults 55 and older favor it by 53%, adults 35-54 support it by 66%, and those18-34 advocate it by 71%.

·        Females and adults 55 and older are most likely to say that marijuana should not be bought and sold in Colorado, even for medicinal reasons.

In three related polls conducted in the Atlanta, San Diego and Austin DMAs, we asked 1,500 adults whether they thought doctors should or should not be allowed to prescribe marijuana.  In exclusive polls conducted for television stations WGCL (Atlanta), KGTV (San Diego) and KVUE (Austin), we found:

·        69% of Atlanta-area adults say that doctors should be permitted to prescribe marijuana.

·        In San Diego, 63% say that it should be legal for doctors to prescribe marijuana.

·        71% of adults in Austin say doctors should be allowed to prescribe marijuana.

About these 4 separate surveys:

SurveyUSA interviewed by telephone 500 adults in the state of Colorado, and 500 adults each in the Atlanta, San Diego and Austin DMA’s on 3/28/2001. Random sample was provided by Survey Sampler. Results have been minimally weighted to adjust for sample variations relating to age, gender, ethnic origin, and region. In theory, if the identical survey were conducted 100 times, in 95 cases the results would not differ by more than 4.1% in the Colorado, Atlanta, and Austin surveys, and 4.5% in the San Diego survey. For smaller subgroups, a larger margin of error applies.
