At the Wire, Baxley Has Momentum in Democrat AL Primary: In a Democratic Primary for Alabama Governor today, 6/5/06, Lucy Baxley appears to come from behind and be poised to defeat former Governor Don Siegelman, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WKRG-TV Mobile. On Election Eve, it's Baxley 46%, Siegelman 41%. Since an identical SurveyUSA WKRG-TV poll on 5/25/06, Baxley has gained 3 points and Siegelman has lost 2 points. On 5/2/06, just as his ongoing trial for political corruption began, Siegelman led Baxley by 8 points; on 5/25/06 they were tied; today, on the eve of the 6/6/06 Primary, Baxley has moved into a 5-point lead. Siegelman leads among younger voters, historically unreliable, and African-Americans. Baxley leads among older voters and Whites. In the campaign's final days, Liberals have shifted sharply towards Siegelman, Conservatives have shifted sharply towards Baxley. The two candidates are tied among male voters. Baxley leads by 8 points among female voters. If neither candidate gets "50% + 1" of the vote, the 2 will face each other in a runoff 7/18/06.
