Mfume, Cardin in Tight Fight: In a Democratic Primary for United States Senate in Maryland today, 8/31/06, Kweisi Mfume and Ben Cardin are neck and neck, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for WMAR-TV Baltimore and WUSA-TV Washington DC. 12 days to the 9/12/06 Primary, Mfume gets 42% of the vote. Cardin gets 38%. Josh Rales trails with 7%. 13% are still undecided. Mfume wins 10:1 among African-American voters. Cardin wins 4:1 among White voters. Mfume wins 3:1 among voters under age 35, the least reliable voters. Turnout will decide this contest.

Owens Leads Schaefer in Comptroller Primary: In a Democratic Primary for Maryland Comptroller today, 8/31/06, Janet Owens edges incumbent William Donald Schaefer, 42% to 35%, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for WMAR-TV Baltimore and WUSA-TV Washington DC. Peter Franchot trails with 15%. 8% are undecided. Owens leads by 11 points among African-American voters. White voters are split. Owens leads by 15 points among women. Schaefer leads by 6 points among men. The election is on 9/12/06. Schaefer, who will turn 85 five days before the 11/7/06 general election, and was previously Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland, has been Comptroller since 1999.

Filtering: 2,000 Maryland adults were interviewed 8/28/06 - 8/30/06. Of them, 1,686 were registered to vote. Of them, 895 were Democrats. Of them, 510 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect Likely Democratic Primary Voters.
