Brown-Waite Defeats Russell; FL5 Stays Republican: In an election for US House of Representatives in Florida's 5th Congressional District today, 10/17/06, incumbent Republican Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite defeats Democrat challenger John Russell, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WFLA-TV Tampa. 3 weeks to the 11/7/06 election, Brown-Waite wins by 13 points, 55% to 42%. Since an identical SurveyUSA WFLA-TV poll released 9/20, Brown-Waite has lost 1 point and Russell has gained 2 points; not enough movement to characterize as significant. Republicans support Brown-Waite 11:1, up from 8:1 on 9/20/06. Democrats support Russell 4:1, unchanged. Independents prefer Russell by 16 points, unchanged. Although Brown-Waite has improved among Republicans, she has lost 3 points overall because the Republican advantage among the composition of FL5 likely voters has declined from 17 points to 11 points. Of those who approve of President George W. Bush's performance in office, 92% support Brown-Waite. Of those who disapprove of Bush's job performance, 73% support Russell. President Bush's job approval among likely voters in Florida's 5th CD is 43%. Brown-Waite was first elected to Congress in 2002.
