Tsongas Is Prohibitive Favorite in MA5 Democratic Primary:
In a Democratic Primary today for U.S. Representative from Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District, Nikki Tsongas is well positioned to defeat a crowded field, in the special Primary to replace Congressman Marty Meehan, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WBZ-TV Boston. Tsongas gets 38% today. Bunched, and effectively tied for for 2nd place, are Lowell City Councilor Eileen Donoghue, at 16%, State Representative Barry R. Finegold, at 14%, and State Representative Jamie Eldridge at 13%. Meehan resigned 07/01/07 to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts. Tsongas is strong across the board and finishes first in every demographic. Donoghue's support skews old. Eldridge's support is Liberal and Independent. Finegold's support is male and moderate.
The Democratic Primary is in 3 weeks, on 09/04/07. The general election is in 9 weeks, on 10/16/07. Tsongas is the wife of former U.S. Senator, and Democratic candidate for President of the United Stats, Paul Tsongas.

1,400 adults from Massachusetts 5th Congressional District were interviewed 08/11/07 through 08/13/07. Of them, 1,291 were registered to vote. Of them, 490 were identified by SurveyUSA as likely to vote in the 09/04/07 Democratic Primary, and were asked the candidate preference question. In SurveyUSA's turnout model, 60% of likely primary voters are registered Democrats, 40% are Independents or are unenrolled.
