Democrat Morrison Ousts Incumbent Kline for Kansas Attorney General: In an election for Attorney General of Kansas today, 10/16/06, Democratic challenger Paul Morrison defeats Republican incumbent Phill Kline, 56% to 43%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KCTV-TV Kansas City and KWCH-TV Wichita. Since an identical SurveyUSA poll 9/14/06, Kline has lost 8 points and Morrison has gained 8 points. Morrison had trailed by 3, now leads by 13. All the movement is among Republicans: Kline leads 2:1 among Republicans, down from a 4:1 lead last month. Morrison gets 87% of Democrat votes, down from 89%. 62% of Independents vote for the Democrat Morrison, up 1 point. Morrison leads by 23 points among women and by 1 point among men. Kline is tied with Morrison in Western KS, down from a 28-point lead on 9/14/06. Kline had led by 20 in the Wichita metro area, now trails by 15 there, a 35-point swing. In Eastern KS, which includes Kansas City, Morrison wins by 16 points, up from 13 points. The election is in 22 days, on 11/7/06.

Incumbents Lead in Contests for KS Governor, Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, Treasurer: In an election in Kansas today, 10/16/06, incumbent officeholders defeat challengers in statewide contests for Governor, Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, and Treasurer, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KCTV-TV Kansas City and KWCH-TV Wichita. Democrat Governor Kathleen Sebelius defeats Republican challenger Jim Barnett, 55% to 42%. Since an identical SurveyUSA poll 32 days ago, on 9/14/06, Sebelius's lead has shrunk from 20 points to 13 points. Republican Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh defeats Democrat challenger David Haley 62% to 32%. Republican Treasurer Lynn Jenkins defeats Democrat challenger Larry Wilson 60% to 37%. Republican Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger defeats Democrat challenger Bonnie Sharp 59% to 32%. None of these three races show any significant movement. The election is in 22 days, on 11/7/06. For Governor, Sebelius gets 90% of Democrat votes. Barnett gets 67% of Republican votes. 33% of Republicans cross over to vote for the Democrat. Independents go for Sebelius by 28 points, down from a 47-point lead. Republicans outnumber Democrats 50% to 31% among likely voters in Kansas. The Republican incumbents Thornburgh, Jenkins, and Praeger are "safe."

Filtering: 1,000 Kansas adults were interviewed 10/13/06 - 10/15/06. Of them, 795 were registered to vote. Of them, 541 were judged to be "likely voters" for the Governor's contest. 535 were judged to be "likely voters" for Attorney General. 531 were judged to be "likely voters" for Secretary of State. 525 were judged to be "likely voters" for Treasurer. 532 were judged to be "likely voters" for Insurance Commissioner.
