Democrat Warner Wins Republican Warner's Seat: In an election for United States Senate in Virginia today, 11/5/07, one year to the vote, Democrat Mark Warner captures the seat of retiring Republican John Warner, regardless of his Republican opponent, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill. Today: Mark Warner defeats Jim Gilmore by 22 points, 57% to 35%, and defeats George Allen by 10 points, 52% to 42%. Against Gilmore: Warner leads by 35 points among women, by 9 points among men, a 26-point Gender Gap. Against Allen: Warner leads by 20 points among women but trails by 1 among men, a 19-point Gender Gap. With Gilmore on the ticket, 22% of Republicans cross-over and vote Democratic. Independents break 2:1 Democrat. With Allen on the ballot, 19% of Democrats cross-over. Independents break 5:4 Democrat.

Allen's Favorable Numbers are Twice Gilmore's, But Not As High as Warner's: Democrat Mark Warner is viewed favorably by 49% of Virginia voters. His Net Favorability is Plus 23. Republican Allen is viewed favorably by 40% of Virginia voters. His Net Favorability is Plus 6. Republican Gilmore is is viewed favorably by 21% of Virginia voters. His net Favorability is Minus 10. By comparison, in Virginia: Nancy Pelosi is at Minus 15; Harry Reid is at Minus 21; Mitch McConnell is at Minus 9 and John Boehner is at Minus 13. President Bush's Job Approval is 37% in Virginia. 15% in Virginia approve of the job Congress is doing.

Congress Should Focus on Immigration and Iraq Ahead of All Other Issues: Asked which one of eight issues Congress should focus on ahead of all others, 17% pick Immigration, 17% pick Iraq. Among voters who pick immigration, Allen leads Warner by 52 points; Gilmore leads Warner by 29 points. Among voters who pick Iraq, Warner leads Allen by 55 points; Warner leads Gilmore by 66 points.

Filtering: 750 Virginia adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 10/27/07 through 10/30/07. Of them, 644 were registered to vote and included in this survey.
