Democrat Take-Away In Colorado State House: In an election for Governor of Colorado today, 9/28/06, Democrat Bill Ritter defeats Republican Bob Beauprez 55% to 38%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KUSA-TV Denver. The election is in 40 days, on 11/7/06. Since an identical SurveyUSA KUSA-TV poll 6 weeks ago, Ritter has gained 5 points and Beauprez has lost 2 points. Ritter's lead has grown from 10 to 17 points. Ritter leads by 29 points among women and by 6 points among men. Ritter gets 89% of Democrat votes. Beauprez gets 74% of Republican votes. 20% of Republicans cross over to vote for the Democrat Ritter. Independents favor Ritter 58% to 25%. Ritter leads by 16 points in the Colorado Springs area. 6 weeks ago Beauprez led by 23 points in Colorado Springs, a 39-point swing. Those who approve of President Bush's performance support Beauprez 79% to 12%. Those who disapprove of Bush support Ritter 83% to 10%. 38% of likely voters in Colorado approve of Bush. Incumbent Republican Governor Bill Owens is term-limited. Should Ritter win, the State House will switch from Republican to Democrat. Beauprez currently represents Colorado's 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House.

Amendment 42 Passes: In a general election in Colorado today, 9/28/06, Amendment 42, raising Colorado's minimum wage, passes 3:1, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KUSA-TV Denver. 43% of Colorado likely voters vote "Yes". 14% vote "No". 40 days to the 11/7/06 election, 43% of likely voters are not certain how they will vote on the Amendment. Of those voters who are certain how they will vote, Democrats support the amendment 20:1, Independents 2:1, Republicans 3:2. Opposition to Amendment 42 is highest among conservatives, who oppose it 31% to 24%. SurveyUSA did not read the text of the Amendment to respondents. Amendments 43 and 44 Too Close To Call: In a general election in Colorado today, 9/28/06, Amendments 43 and 44 are closely contested, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KUSA-TV Denver. On Amendment 43, concerning marriage, 25% vote "Yes" and 25% vote "No". 40 days to the 11/7/06 election, 50% of likely voters are not certain how they will vote on the Amendment. On Amendment 44, concerning marijuana, 29% vote "Yes" and 36% vote "No". 35% of likely voters are not certain how they will vote on the Amendment. Referendum K, about immigration, receives 24% "Yes" and 11% "No", but with 65% uncertain how they will vote no conclusions can be drawn. It is to be expected that, as the election approaches and voters become better informed, voter uncertainty about these measures wll decrease.
