Democrat Challenger Moore Gaining Ground on Incumbent Republican Sanford for SC Statehouse: In an election for Governor of South Carolina today, 9/28/06, Republican incumbent Mark Sanford edges Democratic challenger Tommy Moore, 50% to 46%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCSC-TV Charleston and WLTX-TV Columbia. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll 8 days ago, Sanford has lost 4 points and Moore has gained 5 points. Sanford had led by 13, now leads by 4. The election is in 40 days, on 11/7/06. Sanford gets 84% of Republican votes. Moore gets 83% of Democrat votes. Independents favor Sanford, 50% to 45%. Sanford had led by 34 points among white voters, now leads by 23, an 11-point swing. Sanford had led by 6 points among female voters, now trails by 5, an 11-point swing. Moore gets 73% of black votes. Moore leads among voters under age 50. Sanford leads among older voters. Sanford leads by 21 points in Eastern SC. Moore leads in Central and Western SC. These results are sensitive to voter turnout. If fewer voters are assumed to vote, Sanford's margin over Moore is larger. Sanford was first elected Governor in 2002, when he defeated Jim Hodges 53% to 47%.

SC Lieutenant Governor Race Tied: In an election for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina today, 9/28/06, Republican Andre Bauer and Democratic Robert Barber tie, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCSC-TV Charleston and WLTX-TV Columbia. Bauer gets 49% and Barber gets 48%. The one-point advantage is within the poll's 4.7 percent margin of sampling error. Bauer gets 78% of the Republican vote. Barber gets 79% of the Democrat vote. Barber leads by 6 among Independents. Republican Bauer leads by 15 points among men. Democrat Barber leads by 10 points among women. The two candidates are close in all regions of the state. The election is on 11/7/06.

SC Treasurer Race Tied: In an election for Treasurer of South Carolina today, 9/28/06, Republican Thomas Ravenel and Democratic Grady Patterson are tied at 49%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCSC-TV Charleston and WLTX-TV Columbia. 84% of Republicans back Ravenel. 87% of Democrats back Patterson. Independents split. Ravenel leads by 11 points among men. Patterson leads by 11 points among women, a 22-point gender gap. The two candidates are close in all parts of the state. The election is on 11/7/06.

Floyd In Front of Rex for Superintendent: In an election for Superintendent of Education in South Carolina today, 9/28/06, Republican Karen Floyd wins by 12 points, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCSC-TV Charleston and WLTX-TV Columbia. 40 days to the 11/7/06 election, it's Floyd 50%, Democrat Jim Rex 38%. 8% vote for other candidates. Floyd gets 86% of the Republican vote. Rex gets 72% of the Democrat vote. Floyd wins 2:1 among voters with a household income over $80K.

Filtering: 900 South Carolina adults were interviewed 9/26/06 - 9/28/06. Of them, 728 were registered to vote. Of them, 459 were judged to be "likely" voters for Governor. 453 were judged to be "likely" voters for Lieutenant Governor. 454 were judged to be "likely" voters for Treasurer. 447 were judged to be "likely" voters for Superintendent of Education.
