Analysis: In a Democratic Primary for Massachusetts Governor today, 4/10/06, Deval Patrick and Tom Reilly are in a tight fight, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 426 likely voters conducted exclusively for WBZ-TV Boston. Patrick gets 36% to 33% for Reilly today. Chris Gabrieli, who entered the race on Thursday 4/6, the day before polling started, is a strong third with 19%. 11% are undecided. The Primary is in five months, on 9/19/06. In an exclusive SurveyUSA WBZ-TV poll 5 weeks ago, before Gabrieli entered the race, Reilly led Patrick 47% to 37%. While Reilly has lost 14 points to 33%, Patrick has lost only 1 point to 36%. Gabrieli appears to be taking most of his votes from Reilly. Reilly's support has dropped by 19 points among women and by 7 points among men. Patrick leads Reilly by 15 points among liberals, who are 48% of the likely voters, but trails among moderates and conservatives. The most educated voters and highest-income voters prefer Patrick.

Filtering: 2,400 Massachusetts adults were interviewed 4/7/06 - 4/9/06. Of them, 2,076 were registered voters. Of them, 704 were judged to be "likely voters". Of them, 426 were registered Democrats or Independents who chose a Democratic ballot. Crosstabs reflect Likely Democratic Primary voters.
