NC GOP Primary for Governor: McCrory Enters Race & Vaults to Top of Field --
In a Republican Primary for Governor of NC today, 01/15/08, 16 weeks to the vote, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory at 27% defeats State Senator Fred Smith, attorney Bill Graham and former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV Raleigh. But: one third of likely GOP Primary voters have yet to pick a candidate. Compared to a SurveyUSA poll conducted in November, before McCrory was a candidate, Graham is down 11 points, Smith is down 6 points and Orr is down 9 points. McCrory's lead comes entirely from voters in greater Charlotte, where he is up 34 points over Graham. Smith leads in other parts of the state, with 24% support in Raleigh and 28% support in Southern NC and on the Coast.
