Exit Warner, Enter Warner in VA Senate Race: In an election in Virginia today, to fill the United States Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican John Warner, Democrat Mark Warner defeats all likely challengers, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WJLA-TV Washington DC, WTVR-TV Richmond, WAVY-TV Norfolk, and WDBJ-TV Roanoke. 414 days to the election, Mark Warner, the Democratic former governor, defeats by 35 points Tom Davis, a Republican Congressman ... defeats by 28 points Jim Gilmore, the Republican former Governor of Virginia and former candidate for President of the United States ... and defeats by 19 points George Allen, the Republican former United States Senator from Virginia, who lost his U.S. Senate seat 10 months ago to Jim Webb. It's Warner 62% to 27% over Davis; Warner 60% to 32% over Gilmore; and Warner 56% to 37% over Allen. Warner carries every region of the state, from the DC suburbs to the Shenandoah to the Coast, against every challenger.

Net Favorability: Mark Warner has a Net Favorability Rating of Plus 36, including Plus 15 among Republicans and Plus 32 among Independents. Allen has a Net Favorability Rating of Plus 6, including a Minus 23 among Democrats and a Plus 3 among Independents. Davis has a Net Favorability Rating of Plus 3, including a Plus 1 among Democrats and a Plus 4 among Independents. 46% of Virginia registered voters are unfamiliar with Davis. Gilmore has a Net Favorability Rating of Minus 15, including a Minus 32 among Democrats and a Minus 14 among Independents.

Filtering: 900 Virginia adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 09/14/07 through 09/16/07. Of them, 783 were registered to vote in Virginia and were included in this survey. This is not a survey of likely voters. SurveyUSA will begin screening for likely voters once the Republican party and Democratic party nominees are known. Party composition of these registered voters is: 38% Democrat, 30% Republican, 27% Independent.
