Like 2 Tracer Bullets, McCain and Huckabee Arc Across the NC Sky; Will Shooting Stop Before May? In a Republican Primary in North Carolina today, 02/12/08, Mike Huckabee matches John McCain stride for stride, as the two play a game of Republican "Survivor." In SurveyUSA's first tracking poll for WTVD-TV Raleigh, on 11/06/07, when there were 5 Republicans in contention, McCain and Huckabee were tied -- for 3rd place, behind Rudolph Giuliani and Fred Thompson. In SurveyUSA's 2nd tracking poll, on 01/15/08, McCain and Huckabee were tied again -- for 1st place, ahead of Thompson, Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. In SurveyUSA's 3rd tracking poll, today, 02/12/08, McCain and Huckabee remain effectively tied, but now they are the only two in the race. The interactive tracking graphs for the contest are among the most dramatic SurveyUSA has ever produced. Study them. All likely voters tracked here. Conservative voters tracked here. Charlotte voters tracked here. Southern and Coastal NC voters tracked here. Male voters tracked here. Female voters tracked here. McCain's advantage becomes apparent when you look at the graphs for Moderates here, for Raleigh and Greensboro here, and for voters age 50+ here.

Filtering / Timing: 2,000 state of NC adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 02/11/08. All interviews conducted after results of Kansas, Louisiana and Washington state known, but before results of Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia known. Of the adults, 1,669 were registered to vote. Of them 436 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 05/06/08 NC Republican Primary. Results of the Ohio and Texas primaries in March, and the Pennsylvania Primary in April, can and will color what happens in the NC Primary in May. This survey is a fascinating snapshot in time, which shows the semi-finalists trading punches, late in the fight.
