Fallin Defeats Cornett in OK5 GOP Runoff: On the eve of the 8/22/06 Republican runoff election in Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District, Mary Fallin defeats Mick Cornett, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for KFOR-TV Oklahoma City. Today, Fallin gets 61%, up 3 points from an identical poll 1 week ago. Cornett gets 36%, down 3 points. Fallin's lead has increased from 19 points to 25 points. All of this increase comes from voters under age 35, who supoorted Cornett by 15 points a week ago, but now support Fallin by 20 points. In the 7/25/06 Primary, Fallin finished ahead of Cornett by 10 points but failed to get a majority of votes cast. 67% of those who voted for Denise Bode in the Primary now support Fallin. Fallin leads 5:2 among seniors and 2:1 among voters age 50-64. The winner will face Democrat David Hunter in November. Fallin is currently Oklahoma's Lieutenant Governor. Cornett is currently Mayor of Oklahoma City. The House seat is open: incumbent Republican Ernest Istook is leaving Congress to run for Governor this year. Republicans have a 29-seat majority in the House, which they seek to maintain. Democrats see an open seat as an opportunity to pick up a seat in Congress, and regain control. |
