Open House Seat in OH6 Turns Into a 2:1 Rout for Democrat Wilson: In an election in Ohio's 6th Congressional District today, 10/19/06, Democrat Charlie Wilson defeats Republican Chuck Blasdel 64% to 32%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WYTV-TV Youngstown. Since an identical SurveyUSA WYTV-TV poll 9/29/06, Wilson has gained 10 points and Blasdel has lost 9 points. Wilson's lead has grown from 13 points to 32 points.
Independents now favor Wilson by 44 points, a 51-point swing from 3 weeks ago when they favored Blasdel by 7 points.
Wilson gets 91% of Democrat votes. Blasdel gets 81% of Republican votes. Although support for each candidate within his own party has not changed significantly, Democrats have gone from a 12-point advantage to a 21-point advantage in the composition of OH6 likely voters. Today, 52% of likely voters identify themselves as Democrats, 31% identify themselves as Republicans.
Wilson leads by 42 points among women, a 17-point gain, and by 20 points among men, a 21-point gain.
Wilson won the 5/2/06 Democratic Primary as a write-in candidate after failing to get enough valid signatures to be on the Primary ballot. The OH6 House seat is open: incumbent Democratic Congressman Ted Strickland is running for Ohio Governor this year. The election is in 19 days, on 11/7/06.
