Republican Incumbent Collins Defeats Allen: In an election for United States Senate in Maine today, 11/05/07, one year to the vote, incumbent Republican Susan Collins holds off a challenge from Democrat Tom Allen, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill. Collins defeats Allen by 17 points, 55% to 38% today. Collins holds 85% of the Republican base, woos 25% of the Democrats, and captures 51% of Independents. Collins runs as strong among men as women. She leads in every age group. Collins is ahead by 13 points in Southern Maine, the 1st Congressional District. She is ahead by 21 points in Northern Maine, the 2nd Congressional District.

Both Collins and Allen Well-Known and Liked: Collins is viewed favorably by 48% of Maine voters, viewed unfavorably by 25%, a Net Plus 23 rating. Allen is viewed favorably by 34% of Maine voters, viewed unfavorably by 29%, a Net Plus 5 rating. By comparison, in Maine, Nancy Pelosi is at Minus 14; Harry Reid is at Minus 12; Mitch McConnell is at Minus 12 and John Boehner is at Minus 8. President Bush's Job Approval is 28% in Maine. 15% in Maine approve of the job Congress is doing.

Congress Should Focus on Iraq Ahead of All Other Issues: Asked which one of eight issues Congress should focus on ahead of all others, 25% of Maine voters pick Iraq. Among Iraq-minded Mainers: Allen leads by 9 points.

Filtering: 750 Maine adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 10/26/07 through 10/29/07. Of them, 679 were registered to vote and included in this survey.
