In Romney's Other 'Home' State -- Massachusetts -- He Also Defeats McCain:
In a Republican Primary in MA today, former MA Governor Mitt Romney defeats John McCain, a day after Romney defeated John McCain in Michigan, Romney's other home state. Today in MA, it's Romney 48%, McCain 34% and 4 others in single digits, far back. Among men, the contest is effectively tied, Romney at 45%, McCain at 42%. Among women, tall and handsome Romney leads short and grizzled McCain by 29 points. Romney runs 38 points ahead among Conservatives. McCain runs 6 points ahead among Moderates. Romney runs 31 points ahead among Pro Life voters. McCain and Romney are effectively tied among Pro Choice voters. 4 out of 10 say the next President should focus on the Economy ahead of all other issues. "Economy" voters split between McCain and Romney. 2 of 10 say Immigration is most important. "Immigration" voters back Romney 6:1 over McCain. One third of GOP Primary voters are "Unaffiliated" -- which means they are not registered as Republicans. But: at the moment, the registered Republicans and the Unaffiliated vote almost identically in MA.

Filtering / Timing:
1,200 registered voters were interviewed 01/16/08, using registration based sampling. All interviews were completed after the results of the 01/15/08 Michigan Primary were known. Of the MA registered voters, 269 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in an 02/05/08 Republican Presidential Primary. Results from the South Carolina Primary on 01/26/08 and the Florida Primary on 01/29/08 can and will influence what happens in Massachusetts and the other states that vote on "Super Tuesday." Expect buffeting. |
