AL GOP Senator Sessions Starts with Significant Advantage Over Democratic Challenger Figures: State Senator Vivian Davis Figures is the first Democrat to announce that she will challenge Republican incumbent U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions in Sessions' 2008 bid for a 3rd term. In a head-to-head matchup today, Sessions defeats Figures 59% to 37%. 30% of Alabama Democrats cross-over and vote for Republican Sessions. 7 of 10 whites vote for Sessions. 7 of 10 blacks vote for Figures. Sessions leads by 38 points among men, but Figures trails by only 8 among women -- a 30-point Gender Gap. Sessions leads 8:1 among Conservatives, but Figures is up among Alabama Moderates and Liberals.

Filtering: 600 Alabama adults were interviewed 08/25/07 through 08/27/07. Of them, 530 were registered to vote and were included in this survey. Because other Democrats may announce their intention to oppose Sessions, this survey was not conducted of Likely Voters, just Registered Voters. Once the certain Democratic opponent is known, SurveyUSA will tighten its screen to include just Likely Voters. The election is in 62 weeks, on 11/04/08.
