AL Statehouse Safe for GOP Incumbent: In an election for Governor of Alabama today, 10/18/06, Republican incumbent Bob Riley defeats Democratic challenger Lucy Baxley 57% to 36%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WKRG-TV Mobile. The election is in 20 days, on 11/7/06. In an identical SurveyUSA WKRG-TV poll released 20 days ago, on 9/28/06, Riley led by 16; today he leads by 21. Riley leads by 26 points among men, down from 29. Riley leads by 17 points among women, a 13-point improvement. Riley gets 86% of Republican votes. Baxley gets 74% of Democrat votes. Riley leads by 33 points among Independents. Riley leads by 17 points in Northern AL and 28 points in Southern AL. Those who approve of President Bush's performance support Riley 8:1. Those who disapprove of Bush support Baxley 5:2. 51% of likely voters in Alabama approve of Bush.

Filtering: 900 Alabama adults were interviewed 10/15/06 - 10/17/06. Of them, 764 were registered to vote. Of them, 517 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect Likely Voters.
