VA5 House Race Ends as it Began; Republican Goode Up By Two Dozen: In an election for U.S. House of Representatives today, 11/2/06, in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Virgil Goode defeats Democrat challenger Al Weed, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 530 Likely Voters conducted exclusively for WDBJ-TV Roanoke. SurveyUSA has polled the contest 3 times. In our first WDBJ-TV poll, in July, Goode lead by 24. The contest tightened slightly in SurveyUSA's October poll, conducted during the middle of the Mark Foley publicity. In today's poll, almost every demographic sub-population has returned to its July levels. Overall, Goode is up by 26 points today, 61% to 35%. The tracking graphs almost all look like a bow-tie, with a slight convergence, or "pinch," in October, with voters returning in November to where they were in July. Republicans securely hold this House seat. The election is in 5 days, on 11/7/06.

Filtering: 900 adults from Virginia's 5th Congressional District were interviewed 10/30/06 through 11/1/06. Of them, 768 were registered to vote. Of them, 530 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect Likely Voters.
