Analysis: On the eve of the 9/13/05 Special Election, Oklahomans overwhelmingly reject State Question 723, the Fuel Tax increase, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 398 likely Oklahoma voters, conducted for KFOR-TV and KJRH-TV. 81% vote "No" on Question 723. 19% vote "Yes". In 3 polls over the last 6 weeks, opposition has held steady at 80% or 81%. Opposition is strongest among voters age 35-49 (7:1 against), conservatives (5:1), and non-urban voters (5:1). Opposition is less strong among liberals (2:1), the most educated voters (2:1), and urban voters (3:1).

Filtering: 1,600 Oklahoma adults were interviewed 9/9/05 - 9/11/05. Of them, 1,341 were registered voters. Of them, 398 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect "likely" voters.

Pollster Caveat: Poll predictions are less precise for "landslide" elections, because voters often lose interest once they perceive that the outcome of an election is a foregone conclusion. Typically in a referendum where one side appears to have 80% of the vote, only the most passionate show up to vote.
