Cardin Now Atop Mfume on Eve of MD Democrat Senate Primary: On the eve of the 9/12/06 Democratic Primary for United States Senate in Maryland, Ben Cardin appears to rally to defeat Kweisi Mfume, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WMAR-TV Baltimore and WUSA-TV Washington D.C. Since an identical poll 11 days ago, Cardin has gained 9 points, Mfume has lost 4 points. Cardin had trailed by 4, now leads by 9, a 13-point swing. Josh Rales is unchanged at 7%. Male voters have moved decisively to Cardin in the campaign's final days. Cardin had trailed by 8, now leads by 15 among men. Middle-income voters have moved decisively to Cardin. Cardin had trailed by 20, now leads by 5 among those with annual household incomes of $40,000 to $80,000. Cardin wins 4:1 among White voters. Mfume wins 5:1 among African-American voters. Cardin has an overwhelming 70% to 15% lead among voters over age 65, the most reliable voters. Mfume leads among voters under age 50. If voter turnout is very high, Mfume has a chance to catch Cardin. Cardin wins 3:2 in the Baltimore area. Mfume leads narrowly in the rest of Maryland. Incumbent Democrat Paul Sarbanes is retiring after 30 years in the U.S. Senate. The winner of the Democrat Primary is expected to face Republican Michael Steele in the General Election 11/7/06.

3-way Tie in Comptroller Primary: In a Democratic Primary for Maryland Comptroller today, 9/11/06, Peter Franchot has surged into a 3-way tie with Janet Owens and William Donald Schaefer, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WMAR-TV Baltimore and WUSA-TV Washington D.C. 12 hours until polls open, it's Franchot 32%, Owens 32%, Schaefer 31%. 5% are still undecided. Any outcome is possible. Since an identical poll 8/31/06, 11 days ago, Franchot has gained 17 points, Schaefer has lost 4 points, and Owens has lost 10 points. Franchot's support is strongest among those most certain to vote. The lower the turnout, the better Franchot does. The higher the turnout, the better Owens and Schaefer do. Schaefer, who will turn 85 five days before the 11/7/06 general election, and who was previously Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland, has been Comptroller since 1999.

Filtering: 2,500 Maryland adults were interviewed 9/8/06 - 9/10/06. Of them, 2,124 were registered to vote. Of them, 1,079 were Democrats. Of them, 424 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect Likely Democratic Primary Voters.
