NC GOP Presidential Tracking Poll #2: Huckabee and McCain Tied Tarheel to Tarheel: In a Republican Primary for President in North Carolina today, 16 weeks to the vote, Mike Huckabee, at 28%, and John McCain, at 27%, are effectively tied for the lead, with Fred Thompson, at 15%, in 3rd place, according to this latest SurveyUSA tracking poll of likely Republican primary voters conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV Raleigh. Huckabee leads by 8 among Conservatives. McCain leads by 17 among Moderates. Huckabee has a slight edge in Charlotte and Raleigh. McCain runs stronger in Southern NC and on the Coast. Huckabee's support is young. McCain's support is old.

Filtering: 2,100 North Carolina adults were interviewed 01/12/08 through 01/14/08. Of them, 1,815 were registered to vote. Of them, 485 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the Republican Primary on 05/06/08. Many presidential primaries and caucuses will occur between today and 05/06/08. Some candidates will drop out, others will gain traction. These results should be expected to change as the campaign for President continues to unfold.
