Tracking Poll #1: North Carolina Primary for President, Governor and U.S. Senate

Republican Primary for President: In a Republican Primary for President in North Carolina today, 6 months to the vote, Rudolph Giuliani finishes 1st at 32%, Fred Thompson is 2nd at 21%, John McCain is 3rd at 13%, Mike Huckabee is 4th at 12%, and Mitt Romney is 5th at 10%, according to this SurveyUSA poll of likely primary voters conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV Raleigh. Giuliani edges Thompson among NC Conservatives, 29% to 25%. Giuliani runs strongest in Southern and Coastal NC. Thompson runs strongest in greater Charlotte. Huckabee runs better with women. Romney runs better with men. McCain and Huckabee's support is older. Thompson and Giuliani's support is younger. Republican Primary for Governor: In a Republican Primary for Governor of North Carolina today, Bill Graham is a whisker ahead of Fred Smith, with Bob Orr trailing. Graham gets 26% today, Smith 24%, Orr 15%. One-third of voters are undecided. Much can change. Smith runs almost twice as strong in Raleigh as he does in Charlotte. Graham's support is distributed more evenly geographically. There is no incumbent in this contest.

Democratic Primary for President: In a Democratic Primary for President of the United States in North Carolina today, Hillary Clinton finishes first with 43%, John Edwards 2nd with 25%, Barack Obama 3rd with 19%. Obama gets 11% of the white vote, 39% of the black vote. Clinton leads because in addition to getting 42% of the white vote, she gets 41% of the black vote. Obama's support skews young. Clinton's support skews old. Democratic Primary for Governor: In a Democratic Primary for Governor today, Beverly Perdue leads Richard Moore 47% to 38%. Moore leads among men by 7 points. Perdue leads among women by 23 points -- a 30-point Gender Gap. Perdue is strongest in Southern and Coastal NC. Moore's support is distributed more evenly geographically. Incumbent Mike Easley is term limited. Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate: In a Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate today, Kay Hagan leads Jim Neal 39% to 31%. But: 30% of voters are undecided and much could change. The winner of the primary would face incumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole.

Filtering: 2,100 North Carolina adults were interviewed 11/02/07 through 11/05/07. Of them, 1,850 were registered to vote. Of them, 580 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the Democratic Primary, 453 were determined to be likely to vote in the Republican Primary. Results are based on interviews with Likely Voters.
