Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #14400
For 7th Consecutive Poll, Gregoire and Rossi Tied in WA Governor Rematch: In an election for Governor of Washington today, 09/23/08, 42 days until votes are counted, incumbent Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi once again are effectively tied, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted for KING-TV Seattle and KATU-TV Portland Oregon. Today, it's Gregoire 50%, Rossi 48%. In seven polls conducted since April, Gregoire has led six times, Rossi one time -- but neither has ever led by more than the margin of error.

Compared to an identical poll released 09/08/08, immediately after the Republican National Convention, Gregoire is up 3 points; Rossi is flat. The movement to Rossi in the 09/08 poll can be attributed to a post-convention Palin-related bounce, which similarly boosted John McCain's numbers in SurveyUSA's Washington State presidential tracking, which can be seen here.

Today, among men, Gregoire has climbed to 48% to tie Rossi, her strongest showing yet among male voters. Among women, Gregoire today leads by 4 points, after tying Rossi in the previous poll.

Gregoire today takes 87% of Democratic votes, her highest since tracking began. Rossi today takes 92% of Republican votes, his highest since tracking began. Independents, who make up 1 in 5 likely voters, have consistently preferred Rossi since June, by margins of 24, 8, 10, 6, and 2 points; today, independents favor Rossi by 10.

Gregoire was elected to her first term in 2004, when multiple recounts were needed to determine the winner. On the third recount, Gregoire was determined to have received 129 more votes than Rossi. Gregoire succeeded Democrat Gary Locke. The state has not had a Republican governor in 23 years, since John D. Spellman left office in 1985.

Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 Washington adults 09/21/08 through 09/22/08; of the adults, 791 identified themselves as being registered to vote in Washington state. Of the registered voters, 682 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November general election. 37 of Washington's 39 counties vote exclusively by mail; ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day, 11/04/08.
If you were filling out your ballot for Governor right now, would you vote for (choices rotated) Republican Dino Rossi? Or, Democrat Christine Gregoire?
