In PA10, No Obama Coattails for Carney As He Tries to Hold Seat for Democrats: In an election for United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District today, 08/26/08, ten weeks until votes are counted, incumbent one-term Democrat Chris Carney needs every vote to hold off a challenge from Republican Chris Hackett. Today, it's Carney 49%, Hackett 45%, inside the survey's 4.0 percentage point margin of sampling error. Carney runs 8 points stronger in the district than Barack Obama, who today loses to John McCain 50% to 41%. Carney holds 83% of the Democrat base. Hackett holds 75% of the Republican base. Independents break 5:4 for the Democrat. Moderates break 2:1 for the Democrat. Those who think offshore drilling is key to America's energy future vote 3:1 Republican. Those who think alternative energy is the key to America's energy future vote 3:1 Democrat.

District Complexion: Pennsylvania's 10th District covers 6,500 square miles of Northeastern PA. It is overwhelmingly white. Voters see the economy as the #1 issue for Congress to address. Those focused on the economy favor Carney by 20 points. 36% of voters have a favorable opinion of Hackett, a businessman. His net favorable rating is Plus 13. 40% have a favorable opinion of Carney, a Defense Department consultant and Naval officer before being elected in 2006. Carney's net favorable rating is Plus 17. President Bush's Job Approval is 32% in the district. Job Approval of the US Congress is 13%. Obama is viewed favorably by 40%. McCain is viewed favorably by 36%. But: Obama's Net Favorable Rating is Minus 5. McCain's Net Favorable Rating is Plus 14.

Filtering / Context: 750 registered voters were interviewed by SurveyUSA 08/23/08 through 08/25/08 using Registration Based Sample provided by Aristotle of Washington DC. Of the registered voters, 623 were identified by SurveyUSA as likely to vote in November. The district was represented by a Republican by 46 years, until Republican Don Sherwood was defeated in 2006. Before Carney defeated Sherwood, the last Democrat to represent the district was elected during the Eisenhower administration.
