Perry Loses Support, But Opposition Fragmented: In an election for Texas Governor held today, 6/26/06, Republican incumbent Rick Perry defeats 3 challengers, according to a SurveyUSA election poll conducted for KEYE-TV Austin and WOAI-TV San Antonio. Perry leads with 35% of the vote, down 6 points from an identical SurveyUSA poll 5 weeks ago. Independent "Kinky" Friedman gets 21%, up 5 points. Democrat Chris Bell gets 20%, up 2 points. Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who is running as an Independent, gets 19%, down 1 point. 2% prefer some other candidate. 3% are undecided. Interviews were conducted 6/23/06 to 6/25/06, immediately after the Texas Secretary of State confirmed on 6/22/06 that Friedman and Strayhorn had qualified to be on the ballot. There are 4 1/2 months until the 11/7/06 election. Perry leads most groups, but achieves a majority only among Republicans, Conservatives, and voters with no college education. Friedman's support is strongest among Independents, liberals, and young voters. Bell does best among African-Americans and Democrats, but gets only 44% of Democrat votes. Strayhorn's support is concentrated among women and moderates.
