Both Before & After CNN YouTube Debate, Viewers Say Hillary Would Make the Best President of 8 Democrats: Americans who watched the YouTube Democratic Debate 7/23/07 on CNN went into the debate thinking Hillary Clinton would make the best President of the 8 Democrats on stage, and came out of the debate even more convinced, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll. Before the debate, 40% saw Clinton as the most Presidential Democrat; after the debate, when the same respondents were re-interviewed, 43% saw her as the most Presidential Democrat. Movement in Positive/Negative Numbers: Debate watchers were asked if they viewed each Democrat positively or negatively. Comparing the before and after answers: Biden went up 38 points, from Minus 6 to Plus 32. Obama went up 17 points, from Plus 24 to Plus 41. Clinton went up 16 points, from Plus 34 to Plus 50. Edwards went up 16, from Plus 22 to Plus 38. Dodd went up 15, from Minus 21 to Minus 6. Richardson went up 14, from Minus 1 to Plus 13. Kucinich went up 7, from Minus 21 to Minus 14. Context: How To Conduct a Post-Debate Survey? There is no one universally agreed-upon "right" way to conduct a poll that attempts to measure reaction to an event such as a presidential debate. One approach is to wait till the end of the debate, call people at random, ask if they watched the debate, and ask what debate watchers thought. There are pros and cons to this approach. Another approach is to identify respondents in advance of a debate who promise that they will watch, and then call just those respondents back and re-interview them. There are pros and cons to this approach. After the MSNBC South Carolina Democratic Debate on 04/26/07, SurveyUSA called at random into the state of South Carolina, identified debate watchers, and asked who won. After the MSNBC Politico California Republican debate on 05/03/07, SurveyUSA called at random into the state of California, identified debate watchers, and asked who won. Mark Blumenthal, writing at his blog Pollster.com, identified limitations of such research. SurveyUSA committed to conduct its next debate-reaction poll using an approach advocated by Blumenthal, and used occasionally by other polling firms, known by some as "panel back." Panel Back is not universally sanctioned. See these concerns by outspoken pollster David Hill, as an example. How SurveyUSA Conducted This Debate Survey: On Sunday, 07/22/07, and on Monday, 07/23/07, SurveyUSA dialed at random into all 50 states. Respondents were asked if they planned on Monday night, 7/23/07, to watch the entire YouTube debate on CNN. Those respondents who said "yes" were then asked if SurveyUSA could call them back, immediately after the debate. Those respondents who gave SurveyUSA permission to re-contact them were then, during the pre-debate interview, asked a series of questions, including the respondent's pre-debate opinion of each of the 8 Democratic presidential candidates. A total of 1,456 adults nationwide, who said they planned to watch the entire debate, agreed to be re-interviewed by SurveyUSA. Immediately following the debate, which ended at 9 pm ET on 07/23/07, SurveyUSA attempted to re-contact all 1,456 recruited respondents. Of them, SurveyUSA successfully completed interviews with 717. The pre-debate answers from the 717 respondents who completed the post-debate interview were isolated. A universe was created of 717 debate watchers who participated in a pre-debate and post-debate interview. 100% of respondents in this universe were interviewed twice. Zero percent of respondents completed just one of the interviews. Data from the universe was not weighted. The pre-debate questionnaire and the post-debate questionnaire were identical, except for two questions added to the post-debate questionnaire. 1: "Regardless of who you may vote for, who won tonight's debate?" and, 2: "Regardless of who you may vote for, who lost tonight's debate?" For these two questions no pre-debate trackpoint exists, only post-debate results. For all other questions, there are pre-debate and post-debate trackpoints to compare. There are advantages and disadvantages to the approach that SurveyUSA uses here. The universe of respondents who watched the YouTube debate on CNN and who agreed to be re-interviewed by SurveyUSA may or may not be extrapolatable to a larger universe. The respondent universe is not "likely voters," since no such screen was applied and the 8 debaters will not face each other in any national election. The universe is not "Democrats," since Republicans and Independents also watched the debate and were allowed to participate in the survey. The survey systematically measures the opinions of a random, nationwide cross-section of politically active adults, immediately before and after a significant news event.
