Fresh From Filing Deadline in Seattle WA Mayor Primary, Incumbent McGinn Jumps Out Front of 6 Other Challengers:

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn grabs an early lead on 6 challengers in the open, non-partisan primary for Seattle mayor, where the top 2 finishers advance to a runoff. Who today finishes in 2nd place behind McGinn and might challenge him in the runoff? Could be Peter Steinbrueck, who finishes with 17%. Could be Ed Murray, who finishes with 15%. Or could be Bruce Harrell, who finishes with 12%. All are within striking distance of McGinn, who finishes today with 22%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted for KING-TV.

* McGinn's support is young, liberal, less educated, and less affluent.
* Steinbreuck's support is older (and therefore more reliable), slightly whiter and, like McGinn's support, liberal.
* Murray's support is affluent and educated.
* Harrell's support is black and moderate.

* 41% of voters say the city is on the wrong track, compared to 37% who say the city is headed in the right direction.
* 49% disapprove of the job McGinn is doing as Mayor, compared to 37% who approve (McGinn's Net Job Approval is Minus 12).
* 43% approve of the way McGinn handled the city's gun buy-back program, compared to 37% who disapprove.

* Voters are broadly unhappy with the city's handling of transportation: 60% are dissatisfied compared to 39% who are satisfied.
* The Seattle city Council gets low marks: 28% approve compared to 48% who disapprove of the council, a significant change for the worse since SurveyUSA last measured council approval on 03/07/13.

SurveyUSA interviewed 900 city of Seattle adults 05/17/13 through 05/19/13. Of the adults, 810 were registered to vote. Of the registered, SurveyUSA identified 552 who were likely to vote in the August 2013 primary.
