| WA Governor Rematch Remains Too Close To Call: 12 weeks from Election Day, incumbent Democrat Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi remain neck and neck in the rematch of their 2004 race, according to this latest SurveyUSA tracking poll conducted exclusively for KING-TV in Seattle and KATU-TV in Portland Oregon. Today, it's Gregoire 50%, Rossi 48%, within the survey's 3.7 percentage point margin of sampling error. Little has changed when compared to identical SurveyUSA surveys conducted since April: Gregoire has consistently received 49% or 50% of the vote, and Rossi has consistently received 46% or 47%, until today's poll, where Rossi hits 48% for the first time. Gregoire led by 4 in April, by 2 in May, by 3 in June, by 4 in July, and now by 2 in August. Rossi leads by 6 points among men; Gregoire leads by 10 among women -- a 16 point gender gap. Among Republicans, 11% cross-over and vote Democratic. Among Democrats, 14% cross-over and vote Republican. Independents favor Rossi by 6 points. Gregoire was elected to her first term in 2004, when multiple recounts were needed to determine the winner. On the third recount, Gregoire was determined to have received 129 more votes than Rossi. Gregoire succeeded Democrat Gary Locke. The state has not had a Republican governor in 23 years, since John D. Spellman left office in 1985. |
