NC Republican Tillis Swimming Upstream in Desperate Bid to Hold US Senate Seat for Mitch McConnell's GOP Majority;
Biden Edges Trump Today in Battle for Tar Heel State's Pivotal 15 Electoral College Votes, 27 Weeks Till Votes Are Counted:

In an election for President of the United States in North Carolina today, 04/27/2020, Democrat Joe Biden defeats Republican Donald Trump 50% to 45%, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive poll for WRAL-TV in Raleigh. Though the earliest votes will be counted is in 6 months and much could change in this most volatile and unusual of Presidential election years, Trump starts out in the hole to a man in his basement.

White voters back Trump by a 3:2 margin; black voters support Biden 7:1. Trump leads by 7 points among men; Biden leads by 15 among women -- a 22-point gender gap. Among suburban men, Trump leads Biden by 4 points. Among suburban women, Biden leads by 15. Among the subset of voters who say President Trump's handling of the Coronavirus is a "major factor" in how they will vote this fall, Biden leads 2:1. Among the voters who say Trump's handling of the virus is a "minor factor," Trump has a 4-point edge, 48% to 44%. Among those who say it's "not a factor at all," Trump leads 5:4.

Incumbent Republican United State Senator Thom Tillis today finishes 2 points behind Democrat Cal Cunningham in an election today, 41% to 39%, with 20% undecided. The contest has national implications, with a Tillis re-election essential of Republicans are to keep control of the US Senate and a Cunningham take-away being a central tenant of the Democratic party's plan to throw both Trump and Mitch McConnell out of power.

Tillis, elected in 2014, leads Cunningham -- but does not take a majority -- among men, whites, and voters age 50 to 64. Cunningham, an attorney and former State Senator, leads -- but does not take a majority -- among women, black and Hispanic voters, and voters age 35-49 and 65+. Tillis runs most strongly in Southern and Coastal NC, where he defeats Cunningham 5:3; Cunningham leads in greater Charlotte and Western NC, and in greater Raleigh, while the candidates tie in the Greensboro area. Today's 41% to 39% outcome among likely general election voters is within the survey's theoretical sampling error, which, along with other factors cited herein, makes the contest too-close-to-call at this hour. However: what is clear is that Tillis has none of the advantages of an incumbency, and if Donald Trump has any coat-tails in 2020, Tillis has yet to grab hold of them.

Incumbent Democratic Governor Roy Cooper wins a second term by 2:1 today, defeating incumbent Republican Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest 57% to 30%. Forest comes within 4 points of Cooper among voters 65+, but Cooper holds significant leads among voters age 18 to 64 and among both men and women. Forest is struggling with his base: while 92% of Republicans say they will vote for President Trump, and 72% of Republicans say they will vote for Thom Tillis for US Senate, just 62% of Republicans say they will vote for their party's candidate for Governor, with 1 in 4 defecting to vote for Democrat Cooper.

One possible factor in Forest's failure to date to connect with voters is the Coronavirus: Cooper's overall net job approval is up 23 points since SurveyUSA's last North Carolina poll, released 10 weeks ago, just before COVID-19 squeezed every candidate for 2020 public office off the front page and onto the back burner. Then, Cooper was at Plus 15, with 50% approving of the job the Governor was doing and 35% disapproving. Today, Cooper is at Plus 38; 65% approve, 27% disapprove. Among just Republicans, Cooper's Net Approval has gone from Plus 33 to Plus 50 during the past 10 weeks. By way of comparison, President Trump is even today; 49% say they approve of the job he is doing and 49% disapprove; Trump is up from Minus 7 ten weeks ago.

Incumbent US Senator Thom Tillis' Net Approval today is Plus 6, up from Minus 4.

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 700 adults from the state of North Carolina 04/23/20 through 04/26/20. Of the NC adults, 604 are registered to vote, and 580 are likely to vote in the November general election. In 2016, Trump carried North Carolina 50% to 46%, defeating Hillary Clinton. In 2012, Republican Mitt Romney carried the state, 50% to 48%, over incumbent President Barack Obama. Obama had managed to flip the state Blue by a handful of votes when Obama ran for his 1st term in 2008, edging John McCain.
