Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #19355

2 Weeks to Vote, T-SPLOST Transportation Measure Trails in Atlanta, May Also Trail in Several Other Regions:

In an election today on Georgia's Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or T-SPLOST, the 1-cent sales tax increase does not appear to have majority support, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

SurveyUSA polled 1,292 registered voters from across the state of Georgia; of them, 886 have already cast their ballot or were identified as being likely to vote in the 07/31/12 election. When divided into the separate regions that will individually vote on T-SPLOST, 6 of the 12 regions have large enough populations for SurveyUSA to be able to report results.

In the most populous region, #3, Atlanta, the measure trails 49% to 36%.

In regions #1 and #2, Northwest Georgia and Georgia's Mountains, the measure also trails.

In region #5, Northeast Georgia, the outcome is effectively even.

In region #6, Middle Georgia, and in region #12, Coastal Georgia, the measure has somewhat more support.

SurveyUSA cautions that outside of Region #3, Atlanta, the number of respondents in each region is small. Use extreme care when reporting numbers from any region other than Region #3.

Statewide, a majority of voters say traffic in their areas would remain about the same regardless of whether T-SPLOST passes or does not.

Among the roughly half of voters who drive Georgia 400, 57% say the tolls on that highway should come down, even if that means no further improvements will be made to the road; 35% say the tolls should remain in place.

Cell phone respondents and home phone respondents included in this survey: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,500 Georgia adults 07/11/12 through 07/15/12. Of the adults, 1,292 were registered to vote. Of the registered, 886 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in the 07/31/12 election. This survey was conducted using blended sample, mixed-mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (68% of adults, 72% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (32% of adults, 28% of likely voters) were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone or other electronic device.

1On the July ballot, voters will be asked to increase the sales tax by one cent on the dollar to fund regional transportation projects. Are you ... certain to vote yes? Certain to vote no? Or not certain?
