Analysis: In a special election today, 10/24/05, Maine voters say "No" to Ballot Question 1, the "People's Veto," thereby upholding the new gay rights law, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 607 likely voters, conducted exclusively for WCSH-TV Portland and WLBZ-TV Bangor. 56% vote "No," refusing to reject the new law. 42% vote "Yes," rejecting the new law. The special election is in 15 days, on November 8th. Although men narrowly reject the new law, women vote to uphold it by more than 2:1. Opposition to the new gay rights bill (which means: support for Ballot Question 1) is concentrated among Republicans and conservatives. Southern Maine upholds the law by 5:3. Northern Maine is split. Non-churchgoers uphold the law by 2:1. Churchgoers are split. Previous attempts in Maine to pass laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation, in 1998 and 2000, were narrowly defeated by Maine voters. |
Filtering: 1,800 Maine adults were interviewed 10/21/05 to 10/23/05. Of them, 1,634 were registered voters. Of them, 607 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect "likely" voters. |
