Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #7302

Analysis: In a special election today, 10/24/05, Maine voters say "No" to Ballot Question 1, the "People's Veto," thereby upholding the new gay rights law, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 607 likely voters, conducted exclusively for WCSH-TV Portland and WLBZ-TV Bangor. 56% vote "No," refusing to reject the new law. 42% vote "Yes," rejecting the new law. The special election is in 15 days, on November 8th. Although men narrowly reject the new law, women vote to uphold it by more than 2:1. Opposition to the new gay rights bill (which means: support for Ballot Question 1) is concentrated among Republicans and conservatives. Southern Maine upholds the law by 5:3. Northern Maine is split. Non-churchgoers uphold the law by 2:1. Churchgoers are split. Previous attempts in Maine to pass laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation, in 1998 and 2000, were narrowly defeated by Maine voters.

Filtering: 1,800 Maine adults were interviewed 10/21/05 to 10/23/05. Of them, 1,634 were registered voters. Of them, 607 were judged to be "likely" voters. Crosstabs reflect "likely" voters.

On November 8th, Maine will hold a Referendum Election. Ballot Question 1 asks: "Do you want to reject the new law that would protect people from discrimination in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and credit based on their sexual orientation?" A "Yes" vote would reject the new law. A "No" vote would uphold the new law and allow it to take effect. If the election on Question 1 were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now, would you vote "Yes" to reject the new law? Or would you vote "No" to uphold the new law?
