1st Look at North Carolina Governor's Race: Republican McCrory Leads Democrat Dalton: In an election for North Carolina governor today, 05/22/12, Republican Pat McCrory leads Democrat Walter Dalton by 5 points, according to this latest exclusive WRAL-TV poll conducted by SurveyUSA. McCrory gets 44% today, Dalton 39%. Libertarian Barbara Howe gets 7%; 10% of likely voters are undecided.

Whites vote for McCrory 5:3; blacks vote for Dalton 7:1. McCrory, the former mayor of Charlotte, leads by 22 points in greater Charlotte and the western portion of the state, and by 8 points in the Raleigh area. Dalton, the incumbent Lieutenant Governor, leads by 21 points in the southern and coastal portion of the state, and by 13 points in the Greensboro area. Among men, McCrory leads by 12; among women, Dalton leads by 1 -- a 13-point gender gap. Among voters age 18 to 49, McCrory leads by 11; among those age 50+, Dalton has a nominal 1-point lead.

47% of registered voters today say they oppose a three-quarter cent sales tax increase to restore education funding; 42% support. Support for the tax increase is above 50% among liberals, Democrats, those with higher incomes, voters age 65+, and in the Greensboro area.

Drilling for oil and natural gas off North Carolina's cost is today supported by a 20-point margin, 46% to 26%. In July 2010, when SurveyUSA asked the identical question of North Carolina registered voters three months after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred and 2 days before that well was capped, drilling was supported by only a 2-point margin. On the separate topic of hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" to find natural gas, support is by a narrower 11-point margin, 35% to 24%.

7 of 10 North Carolina voters who are familiar with internet sweepstakes parlors say they should remain in business, with 48% saying the state should regulate and tax the businesses, and 21% saying the state should allow the parlors to continue to run without regulations. 10% say parlors should be outlawed, but the state lottery should provide similar games; 13% say parlors should be outlawed and the lottery should not provide similar games.

39% of North Carolina voters say the state's economy will be stronger one year from now than it is today; 38% say it will be about the same. 13% say it will be weaker. The more you earn, the more likely you are to be optimistic: among those with incomes under $40k, "same" beats "stronger" by 12 points. Among those with incomes between $40k and $80k, "same" beats "stronger" by 5 points. Among those with incomes above $80k, "stronger" beats "same" by 24 points.

 
Cell phone respondents and home phone respondents included in this research. 700 North Carolina adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 05/18/12 through 05/21/12. Of the adults, 606 were registered to vote in North Carolina. Of the registered voters, 524 were determined to be likely to vote in the 11/06/12 general election. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (75% of registered voters), were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents unreachable on a home telephone (25% of registered voters) were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone, tablet, laptop or other electronic device. In this research, home telephone and cell phone respondents vote differently: among cell phone respondents, Dalton leads McCrory by 9 points; among home phone respondents, McCrory leads Dalton by 10.
