6 Months Till Primary for Mayor of San Diego, Even City Residents 'Certain to Vote' Are Not Yet Focused on Contest to Succeed Faulconer;
At Present, Gloria Leads Bry 2:1, But Half of Likely Voters Are Undecided; Homelessness and Affordable Housing Are Top Issues:

State Assemblyman Todd Gloria is an early front-runner in the primary contest for Mayor of San Diego, according to SurveyUSA research conducted for KGTV-TV and the Union Tribune newspaper. At this hour, 6 months till the statewide CA primary on Super Tuesday 2020, it's:

* Gloria 31%.
* City Council member Barbara Bry 15%.
* Community Activist Tasha Williamson 8%.
* 46% of those city residents most likely to vote are undecided.

Though the election is non-partisan, voters from all parties are allowed to participate. Candidates have 3 months before they are required to file if they plan to run, and, so far, only 3 Democrats have declared they are running for Mayor.

Gloria has a Plus 17 net favorability rating. 34% of likely voters view him favorably, 17% view him unfavorably. Gloria has disproportionate support among very liberal voters, among seniors, and among voters who say that climate change is the most important issue in which candidate they choose to be mayor.

Bry is less well known but still has a Plus 10 net favorability rating. 18% of likely voters view her favorably, just 8% view her unfavorably, 35% have a neutral opinion of Bry, but 39% have never heard of her. Bry runs strong among San Diego's Asian voters, where she nominally is atop Gloria, 23% to 22%. Her supporters are 'very conservative,' see roads as the most important issue, and are opposed to a 'Community Choice Aggregation' energy plan.

While 39% of likely voters say they would support adding affordable housing to their neighborhood in San Diego, compared to just 20% who would oppose, 41% say 'it depends.' 52% of Williamson voters, 47% of Gloria voters, and 32% of Bry voters support adding affordable housing to their neighborhood.

56% of voters want more restrictions on electric scooters. 58% support Community Choice Aggregation, which allows the city to purchase electricity from alternate sources and sell that electricity to residents at less than what San Diego Gas and Electric charges.

While large majorities of all three candidates' voters say it is appropriate for the city of San Diego to have a Climate Action Plan, they differ on whether or not the city is living up to the goals of that plan. Bry voters, by an 11-point margin, say the city is living up to the goals of the plan; Gloria voters, by a 25-point margin, say the opposite -- San Diego is not living up to the goals of the plan.

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 800 city of San Diego adults 09/03/19 through 09/05/19. Of the adults, 691 are registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 550 who are likely to vote in the Super Tuesday primary. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (45% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (aka: the cell-phone respondents; 55% of likely voters) were shown a questionnaire on the display of their smartphone, tablet, or other electronic device. The top-2 vote getters in the 03/06/20 primary will advance to a November 2020 general election.
