Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #14467

Georgia Senate: Suddenly, Saxby Chambliss Is Confronted by a Rising Democratic Tide: In an election for United States Senator from Georgia today, 09/30/08, five weeks until votes are counted, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss edges Democratic challenger Jim Martin 46% to 44%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted for WXIA-TV Atlanta and WMAZ-TV Macon. Results are within the survey's 3.8 percentage point margin of sampling error and reflect a contest that is effectively tied. Compared to a SurveyUSA poll released 13 days ago, Chambliss is down 7 points; Martin is up 8, a 15-point swing to the Democrat. These results need to be analyzed in the context of the election for president, where, during the same field period, Obama went up 3 points and McCain went down 5 points, an 8-point swing to the Democrat. The Senate movement was in the same direction, but more pronounced.

Among men, Chambliss had led by 22, now trails by 2. Among women, Chambliss had led by 13, now leads by 6. Among voters age 18 to 49, Chambliss had led by 15, now ties Martin. Among those age 50+, Chambliss had led by 19, now leads by 6. Among voters with incomes below $50K, Chambliss had led by 7, now trails by 14. Among higher-income voters, Chambliss had led by 23, now leads by 12.

Among the small number of respondents who tell SurveyUSA they have already cast their ballots in early or absentee voting, Martin, a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives, leads by 25 points. Among those who have not yet voted, Chambliss leads by 4.

Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 Georgia adults 09/28/08 and 09/29/08. Interviews were conducted during a time of unprecedented economic and political turmoil. It is possible that voter unhappiness with the failure of the United States Congress to pass an economic rescue package may have created a backlash against the incumbent in this contest. If that is temporary, it would be reflected in SurveyUSA's next poll in the contest. Of the GA adults, 804 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 677 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely voters in the 11/04/08 general election. Saxby Chambliss was first elected to the United States Senate in 2002; he is seeking his second term.

Georgia will also elect a United States Senator. If the election for United States Senator were today, would you vote for ... (choices rotated) Republican Saxby Chambliss? Democrat Jim Martin? Or Libertarian Allen Buckley?
