Virginia: Clinton, Giuliani Tie; Giuliani Tops Obama; McCain Leads Both Dems
The last time Virginia voted for a Democrat in a presidential election, it was LBJ in 1964. On the other hand, the state’s current and former governors are both Democrats, as is US Senator Jim Webb, elected in 2006; Democrats also now control the state senate, all of which have led to speculation the Old Dominion State could go blue in 2008.
At the moment, whether or not that is feasible depends on exactly who the candidates are … and if it’s John McCain on the GOP side, it doesn’t look especially likely.
McCain leads Hillary Clinton by 9 points today among Virginia registered voters, and leads Barack Obama by 10.
Separately, the see-saw Giuliani/Clinton matchup in Virginia remains tight, with those two candidates each getting 45% of the vote today:
Meantime, the former New York City mayor holds a 4-point lead over Barack Obama, a flip from this past summer, when Obama led Giuliani by 3:
Research conducted for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke and WJLA-TV in Washington, DC. Full results, crosstabs, and the ever-interesting tracking graphs by demographic subpopulation (16 months ago, Giuliani led Clinton by 4 points among registered female voters in Virginia; today, Clinton leads Giuliani in that group by 14, down from a high of 18 two months ago) are all located right here.
