Priorities Shift in South Carolina: For GOP Voters, Economy Now Tops Immigration

As the GOP campaigns begin to move full-time into South Carolina, site of Saturday’s Republican Presidential Preference Primary, we’ve noticed a shift in what voters say should be the top issue for the next President.
Ten days ago, our polling showed immigration was the most important issue, according to 26% of voters. 22% said it was the economy, with another 20% choosing terrorism. No other issue topped 11%.
Our latest polling in South Carolina, though — to be released later today by WCSC-TV in Charleston and WSPA-TV in Greenville – shows priorities have shifted. Today, 35% say the economy is the most important issue; immigration is now second, at 23%; terrorism is still third, but has dropped back to 15%.
Full results — which will also show a new leader in the race — will be posted right here later this evening.
