Super Tuesday Watch: Mass Likes Mitt; Clinton Holds Wide Lead on Dem Side

Massachusetts voters would choose their former governor if the state’s Republican primary election were held today. SurveyUSA’s latest exclusive polling for WBZ-TV in Boston shows Romney would take 48% of the vote; John McCain would get 34%. No other candidate gets more than 8%.

Both Republicans and unaffiliated voters can vote in the Republican primary in Massachussetts; Romney and McCain popularity is about equal among both groups.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton today holds a 33-point lead over Barack Obama, and a 42-point lead over John Edwards. Those results are here. A couple of crosstabs of significant interest there are the gender and the party affiliation ones, excerpted here:

  • Among women, Clinton holds a 42-point lead over Obama, and a 53-point lead over Edwards. Among men, it’s a 16 and 24-point lead, respectively.
  • Edwards performs about twice as well — 16% vs. 9% — among Democrats as he does among unaffiliated voters.
  • Obama runs more than 50% better — 31% vs 20% — among unaffiliated voters as he does among Democrats.
