58% in New York Say Governor Eliot Spitzer Should Resign

Immediately after news stories surfaced about New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s possible involvement in a prostitution ring, SurveyUSA interviewed 900 adults statewide.

  • 32% of New Yorkers say, based on what they know now, the Governor should remain in office.
  • 58% say the governor should resign.

This is a preliminary measure of public sentiment. SurveyUSA did not allude to or characterize the news stories in any way. As more New Yorkers learn of the news, and as more about the prostitution ring is made known, opinions may shift. Spitzer’s Job Approval in February was 35%. Today: unchanged at 35%.

Yes, Spitzer probably should resign. However if he doesn’t, then the courts should decide his guilt. Why are the Republicans saying they are going to start impeachment procedings when he hasn’t been convicted of anything?
