80%: We’ll See $5 Gas Before $3 Gas — and Mass Transit not an Option for Many

80% of Americans tell SurveyUSA they expect to see gasoline selling for $5 per gallon before they’ll see it at $3 per gallon.
Just 18% say they expect the price to fall to $3 first. Those aged 18-34 are significantly more likely than others to take this view.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents with vehicles say they’ve thought about the possibility of gas prices rising so high they’ll be unable to afford to drive … and for many, taking mass transit is not a viable option. Only 15% of Americans who own or lease cars say mass transit is a convenient option for them; 50% say taking mass transit would be inconvenient — and for one out of every three Americans, there is no mass transit available at all to meet their needs. Those in the south and midwest are the most likely to say they have no mass transit; those in the western states are the most likely to say they mass transit options, whether convenient or otherwise.
