Obama’s New Jersey Coattails Provide No New Tailwind For Democrat Lautenberg in Bid For Senate Re-Election

SurveyUSA Breaking News - 10/14/08 09:45 AM

In an election for United States Senator from New Jersey today, Democratic incumbent Frank Lautenberg defeats Republican Dick Zimmer 51% to 38%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WABC-TV New York and WCAU-TV Philadelphia. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released two weeks ago, neither candidate’s numbers have changed. This is significant given that Obama has gained 5 net points on McCain in New Jersey during the same period.

Lautenberg, who served in the Senate from 1982 through 2000 and who won election again in 2002, leads by 11 points among men and by 15 points among women. 14% of Republicans cross over to vote for Lautenberg; 11% of Democrats cross over to vote for Zimmer, a former US House member. There is movement among Independents to Zimmer.
