Months to San Diego Mayor Primary, DeMaio and Filner Tied, Others Viable

In an election for Mayor of San Diego today, Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner tie, with Bonnie Dumanis and Nathan Fletcher not far behind, according to a SurveyUSA poll  conducted for KGTV-TV.

  • City Council Member DeMaio, at 25%, is strong among Conservatives, men, older voters and whites.
  • Congressman Filner, at 25%, is strong among Hispanics, Democrats, middle-income voters and liberals.
  • San Diego County District Attorney Dumanis, at 16%, is strong among women, seniors and those who have not graduated from college.
  • State Assemblyman Fletcher is strong among Tea Party members and the affluent.

Cell phones included in this survey: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 San Diego adults 09/23/11 through 09/27/11. Of them, 794 were registered to vote. Of the registered, 588 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 06/05/12 primary. If no one candidate receives a majority of the vote in the primary, the top two finishers will advance to a 11/06/12 general election. Incumbent Mayor Jerry Sanders is term-limited. This survey was conducted multimode. Respondents with a home telephone were interviewed in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents without a home telephone (18% of adults, 15% of likely voters) saw the questions presented visually on their smartphone or other electronic device.
