Dem Rank-and-File Unimpressed With Party Response to Trump, Want Dems in Congress to Fight, Not Compromise; Don't See Strategy, Direction:

Hot on the heels of exclusive research showing a significant majority of Democrats feel "hopeless and defeated," SurveyUSA today finds Democrats dissatisfied with their party's reaction to Donald Trump's second term, looking for direction from the party's leaders, and imploring those in Congress to fight, not compromise with the administration and its goals.

Just 23% of Democratic voters say the party's response to Donald Trump's second term has so far been either excellent (7%) or good (16%); 68% have a negative view, with 25% calling the response "only fair," 22% "poor," and 21% saying it is "unacceptable." 31% of Latino Democrats – a group the Democratic party desperately needs to reconnect with – say the party's response is unacceptable.

By an overwhelming majority, 76% to 20%, Democrats say their representatives in Congress should fight harder against Trump's agenda, not find ways to compromise with the administration. Support for compromise is anemic across the board, rising above 30% only among the 6% of Democrats who say they voted for Trump in November. Excluding those Trump voters, support for fighting harder against Trump is no lower than 62% among any demographic subgroup.

Just 28% say they feel Democrats have a clear strategy for opposing Trump in Washington, and almost the same number, 27%, feel Democratic leadership has given them direction on how to oppose Trump themselves. When rank-and-file Democrats do find ways to take action in response to what they see happening in their country today, few are confident their actions will make a difference: 19% say they are extremely confident their actions will make a difference, while 40% are unsure, 27% are doubtful, and 14% are extremely sure their actions will not make any difference.

A small handful of items that Democratic leaders viewing these poll results may find some solace in:
  • While roughly ⅓ of Dems say the current Democratic party reflects their priorities "not too well" (27%) or "not at all" (7%), a significant plurality of 45% say it reflects them "fairly well," and another 14% say it does so "almost perfectly."
  • 50% of Democrats say the 10 Senators who, led by Chuck Schumer, voted with Republicans to avoid a government shutdown in March did the right thing; 24% say they did the wrong thing; 26% aren't sure.
  • Presumably most reassuringly for Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, and perhaps least satisfyingly for those backing an AOC primary challenge to Schumer in three years and those who see her and Jasmine Crockett as the actual leaders of the party, 49% of Democrats today say the Democrats serving in party leadership roles should continue to serve in those positions. 34% say it is time for them to give up those roles and let someone else lead.
