Any Way You Look At It, Biden Still Atop Democratic Field Following Detroit Debates and Weekend Replete With Rifle Reports;
Primary Voters Nationwide Not Focused on Policy Semantics, Want Next President to Resuscitate the Democracy, Then The Planet:

Joe Biden, who first announced his run for the Presidency 22 years ago, remains today the favorite of active, motivated 2020 Democratic Primary voters, outpacing 24 rivals, according to SurveyUSA research conducted 08/01/19 through 08/05/19, immediately following the Democratic candidate debates in Detroit.

At this hour, exactly 6 months until the votes are counted in the Iowa Caucuses, it's:

* Former vice President Biden: 33%.
* Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders: 20%.
* Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren: 19%.
* California Senator Kamala Harris: 9%.
* South Bend IN Mayor Pete Buttigieg: 8%.
* All 19 other Democratic candidates combined: 3%.

Biden has 40% or more support among seniors (43%), among moderates (44%), among those with a high-school education (42%), among Evangelical Christians (46%), among Protestants (42%), among those who are "strongly pro-life" (40%), and among residents of the Northeast (41%), surprising given that there are 5 other Democratic candidates running from the Northeast region --- Sanders, Warren, Gillibrand, de Blasio and Booker. Sanders exceeds 40% support among the youngest voters (45%) and, of importance, outpaces Biden 35% to 30% among single parents. Warren does not break 30% in any demographic group, but has disproportionate support among women (22%), independents (24%), single voters (22%), Catholics (22%), those who attend religious services "almost never" (23%), among self-described "poor" voters (22%), among white middle-class voters (23%), and in LGBTQ households (25%), where Warren finishes in 1st place, nominally ahead of both Biden and Sanders, and with twice the support of Buttigieg, who is openly gay.

Biden's air of invincibility survives, despite debates in June and July in which Biden was at best lackluster. Assuming incumbent President Donald Trump is the Republican nominee in 2020, a majority of active, engaged Democrats say that Working-Class Joe is the Democrats' best hope:

* 52% say Biden has the best chance to defeat Trump in the November general election.
* 15% say Sanders, a 2016 re-tread, has the best chance to defeat Trump.
* 11% say Warren has the best chance to defeat Trump.
* No other Democrat is in double digits.

Of immediate and material significance to every Democrat running for President: while candidates waste oxygen and time responding to debate moderators who want aspirants to argue microscopically about how best to take health insurance away from those who already have it and fight over whether college should be free for none, some, or for all, active Democratic voters are focused on a much larger concern. Asked what the "very first thing" the next President should so, Democrats say:

* Repair damage done by the previous President: 43%.
* Reduce the income disparity between rich and poor: 14%.
* Address climate change: 12%.
* Embrace all Americans: 11%.
* Restore the rule of law: 6%.
* All other choices combined: 13%.
* Items presented to respondents randomly; results rank-ordered here for ease of comprehension. Donald Trump's name did not appear in question text.

There is no material "intensity gap" in Biden's support. 43% of the most actively engaged Democrats say they already have or would donate money to Biden, compared to 39% who have or would donate to Sanders, 34% who have or would donate to Warren, 25% who have or would donate money to Harris and 23% who have or would donate money to Buttigieg. 48% of the most active Democrats say they would volunteer to work for Biden, compared to 42% who would volunteer for Warren, 41% who would volunteer for Sanders, 31% who would volunteer for Harris and 26% who would volunteer for Buttigieg.

18% of likely Democratic voters say the party's message in 2020 is too far to the left. 8% say the party's message is too far to the right. A majority, 54%, say the party's message is right where it should be. A plurality, 43%, say the federal government today is too big. But active Democrats are divided about which way to turn should they seize the White House. 31% of active primary voters say a Democratic President should make the federal government smaller. 25% say a Democratic President should make the federal government bigger. Another 25% say the federal government should stay the size it is now.

Eligibility for inclusion in this survey: This is a survey of Democrats and independents from all 50 states. Because the United States has no single nationwide primary, and because each individual state sets its own rules for determining whether there is a presidential primary or caucus or neither in that state, and (in concert with the Democratic National Committee) when that primary or caucus is held and how the delegates from that primary or caucus are apportioned, it is not possible to define with any consistency what a "likely Democratic primary voter" is in a nationwide survey. To this end, in order to qualify for inclusion in this SurveyUSA poll, an adult age 18+ had to be 1) registered to vote, 2) had to indicate that (regardless of which political party he/she might be affiliated with) if there were a Presidential primary or caucus "today" in his/her state he/she would be certain to vote in the Democratic contest (not the Republican contest), 3) on a scale of 1-to-10, had to have a strong interest in current events, 4) on a scale of 1-to-10, where 10 means the respondent "spends hours every day reading, watching and talking about the Presidential election," had to have a high level of commitment, 5) had to have been aware of the Democratic debates taking place in Detroit, and 6) if they watched all, or at least some of the debates, had to be able to identify from a list of news networks that CNN was the moderator of the Detroit event. These 6 filtering criteria were designed intentionally to winnow America's 200 million registered voters into the tiniest subset who are paying close attention to the Democratic campaign, to reduce as much as possible, the extent to which high, legacy name-recognition-only might account for any one candidate's lead or strong showing and might give "new to the stage" less well-known candidates a chance for their support to more easily surface. In the end, the aggressive filtering appears to make little or no difference in the outcome. In the 18 most recent nationwide Democratic primary polls, Biden's support averages 32%. SurveyUSA's comparatively tight voter screen places Biden today at 33%. This suggests that if there is any air leaking out of the Biden balloon, SurveyUSA did not detect it. A total of 7,000 adults were interviewed nationwide 08/01/19 through 08/05/19. Of the adults, 5,459 are registered to vote. Of the registered, 999 passed all 6 SurveyUSA screening criteria and were counted as a "likely" voter and asked the "which Democrat would you vote for in a Democratic primary today" question. During the field period for this survey, 31 individuals were murdered in 2 separate mass shootings. SurveyUSA's best estimate is that approximately two-thirds of the interviews for this survey were completed before news broke midday 08/03/19 of the the 1st mass shooting in El Paso TX and approximately 83% of the interviews for this survey were completed before Americans woke up Sunday 08/04/19 to news of the 2nd mass shooting in Dayton OH. Also today 08/06/19: SurveyUSA releases a poll of state of California primary voters, with filtering criteria unique to the state of California. Results from California, which contrast with these nationwide results, are available here. Californians in 2020 vote on so-called "Super Tuesday," 1 month after Iowa, exactly 7 months from today.

5Democratic candidates for President debated this week in Detroit. Which best describes you: I watched the debates from beginning to end on both nights I watched some of the debates "live", but mostly I saw highlights afterwards I did not watch any of the debates "live", but I saw news coverage afterwards I did not watch the debates or see any news coverage of the debates I was not aware the Democrats were debating

30What is the very first thing any Democrat should do if they are elected President in 2020? (answer choice order rotated)
Take guns away from gun owners? Raise taxes? Restore the rule of law? Encourage the Federal Reserve Bank to lower interest rates? Repair damage done by the previous President? Embrace all Americans? Address climate change? Reach out to our traditional allies? Build a wall between the USA and Mexico? Reduce the disparity between the rich and the poor? Relax bureaucratic regulations? Or something else?
