Charlotte NC Mayor Election Could Go Either Way: Smith, Lyles Even 2 Weeks Till Votes Are Counted;
City Supports $15 Minimum Wage, Opposes Subsidy of Soccer Stadium, Divided on Confederate Statues:

2 weeks until votes are counted in the mayor's election in Charlotte NC, the contest between Democrat Vi Lyles and Republican Kenny Smith is a tight fight, where every vote may determine which candidate emerges victorious, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted for Spectrum News North Carolina.

At this hour, it is Lyles 41%, Smith 40%, effectively even. Smith holds 85% of the Republican base; just 6% defect to Lyles. Lyles holds just 71% of the Democratic party base; 12% defect to Smith. Independents break for Smith. Moderates split.

Whites and blacks see the candidates in contrast. Smith leads among white voters by 2:1. Lyles leads among African American voters by 2:1. Smith, a man, leads by 19 points among men. Lyles, a woman, leads by 20 points among women. A 39-point gender gap. Smith's support is young. He leads by 30 points among voters age 18 to 34. But those voters are sometimes the least reliable in an off-year, low-turnout election. Lyles leads among voters 35+.

Among voters who say affordable housing is the most important issue facing the city, Lyles leads by 34 points. Among voters focused on transportation, and among voters focused on social issues, Smith narrowly edges Lyles.

Charlotte residents by 3:1 oppose the use of taxpayer dollars to help pay for the cost of a new soccer stadium in the city. Residents by 5:3 support a $15 minimum wage. 38% say that Confederate war memorials and statues on public property should be left in place. A plurality, 43%, say the statues should be moved to a museum. 11% say the statues should be removed from view entirely.

More than 2/3 of residents who are following news stories about Interstate 77 say the state should try to buy its way out of the I-77 toll-lane contract.

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 850 city of Charlotte adults 10/18/17 through 10/21/17. Of the adults, 767 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 517 voters likely to participate in the 11/07/17 election. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (66% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (34% of likely voters) were shown a questionnaire on the display of their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device. Incumbent Democratic Mayor Jennifer Roberts was defeated by Lyles in a September primary.
