WA State Governor: McKenna (R) 42%, Inslee (D) 41%. WA State Attorney General: Dunn (R) 37%, Ferguson (D) 37% In an election for President of the United States today, 07/18/12, Barack Obama carries Washington state's 12 electoral votes, 46% to 37%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KING-TV in Seattle. This is half the winning margin that Obama had in 2008 when he defeated John McCain by 17 points in Washington state. In the fiercely contested race for Governor of Washington, the contest remains effectively even, 42% for Republican Rob McKenna, 41% for Democrat Jay Inslee, well within the possible margins of error for such a survey. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 2 months ago, on 05/10/12, there is little change. Then, McKenna had a nominal 2-point advantage. Today, he has a nominal 1-point advantage. McKenna's opposition to Obama's health-care legislation endears as many voters as it alienates. McKenna voters are more enthusiastic than are Inslee voters: Of those voting for McKenna, 72% cast their ballot enthusiastically, 26% do so with reservations. Of those voting for Inslee, 58% cast their ballot enthusiastically, 36% do so with reservations. Voters say McKenna would do a better job managing the state's budget. In the contest for Attorney General of Washington, Republican Reagan Dun and Democrat Bob Ferguson remain today as they were 6 months ago: tied. At this hour, 37% vote Dunn, 37% Ferguson. When SurveyUSA last measured the contest, on 01/16/12, it was 38% Ferguson, 37% Dunn. The nominal 1-point movement is not statistically significant. Washington state voters are in favor of an initiative that would authorized charter schools, in favor of an initiative that would decriminalize marijuana, and divided on whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell is 11 points atop Republican Michael Baumgartner in Cantwell's bid for re-election. This is largely unchanged since SurveyUSA last polled the contest 6 months ago, on 01/16/12. Then, Cantwell led by 9, today by 11. Cell-phone and home-phone respondents included in this research: SurveyUSA interviewed 630 state of Washington registered voters 07/16/12 and 07/17/12, using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (70% of registered voters) were interviewed on their home telephones in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (30% of registered voters) were shown a quesitonnaire on their smartphone, tablet, laptop or other electronic device. |

| 5 | As Attorney General of Washington state, Rob McKenna joined other states in a lawsuit challenging the individual mandate, that will require all Americans to carry insurance or face a penalty. Does McKenna's involvement in challenging the health care law make you more likely to support McKenna as a candidate for governor? less likely support McKenna? or does it make no difference? |

| 15 | A state initiative would license and regulate marijuana production, distribution and possession for people 21 and over. It would remove state criminal and civil penalties for limited possession of marijuana, impose an excise tax on marijuana sales and earmark some revenue for substance abuse prevention, research and education. Should the measure be enacted into law? |
