Denver Voters Take Wait-and-See Attitude Toward Crowded Mayoral Field, With 3 of 5 Likely Voters Undecided and Leading Candidates Tied at 5%:

Two weeks before ballots are mailed in the race for Denver Mayor, 58% of likely voters are undecided and none of the 17 candidates in the contest break 5%, according to SurveyUSA polling conducted exclusively for KUSA 9News, The Denver Gazette/Colorado Politics, and MSU-Denver. If the election were today, here's how the candidates would finish:
  • 5%: Lisa Calderón. Calderón polls as high as 12% among voters who say they are "very liberal" and is at 8%, tied for the lead, among Latino voters.
  • 5%: Mike Johnston. Johnston runs more than twice as strongly among men than among women, and is at 16% among Black voters.
  • 5%: Kelly Brough. Brough's support increases with voter age, from 2% among the youngest voters to 8% among those 65+, where she nominally leads.
  • 4%: Chris Hansen. Hansen also runs well among senior citizens, taking 7% of their votes.
  • 4%: Deborah "Debbie" Ortega. Ortega does twice as well among Latinos as she does overall, taking 8% of Latino votes, tied with Calderón.
  • 3%: Leslie Herod. Herod is at 14% among Black voters, just behind Johnston, and also at 14% among very liberal voters, where she leads.
  • 3%: Al Gardner. Gardner's support skews young; he sees 6% support among 18 to 34 year-old voters, 1% among those 35 to 49; 0% among those 50+.
  • 3%: Thomas Wolf. Wolf takes 8% among Black voters.
  • 2%: Trinidad Rodriguez. All of Rodriguez's support is young: he takes 7% of the vote among those 18 to 34, and 0% among those 35+.
  • 2%: Terrance Roberts.
  • 2%: Andy Rougeot. Rougeot, the one Republican in the nonpartisan contest, is at 5% among Republicans and at 7% among conservatives.
  • Four candidates are each at 1%: Renate Behrens, Kwame Spearman, Aurelio Martinez, and Ean Thomas Tafoya.
  • Two candidates each are at 0%: James Walsh and Robert Treta.
Voters were also asked how important each of 11 issues was for Denver to address over the next few years. Percentage saying each of the following was "one of the very most important issues for Denver to address," ranked from highest to lowest, along with any mayoral candidates who see outsized support among those voters most focused on these issues:

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed a total of 820 Denver adults 02/21/23 through 02/28/23. Of the adults, 713 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 594 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the April election for Denver Mayor. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (33% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer, using telephone sample of registered voters purchased from Aristotle in Washington DC. Respondents unreachable on a landline telephone (67% of voters) were shown the survey questions on the display of their smartphone, laptop or tablet, using online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, and home ownership.
