Abortion, Inflation, Border Security are Top Issues for WA Voters; Majority Says Supreme Court is Out of Touch With Values, Beliefs of Most:

26% of likely voters in Washington State's upcoming election for US Senate say abortion is the issue that will be most important to them this fall, according to SurveyUSA's latest polling conducted exclusively for The Seattle Times, KING 5 TV, the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public, and Washington State University's Murrow College of Communication. Women, at 34%, are twice as likely as men to identify abortion as their most important issue.

Inflation is most important to 22% of voters, including 41% of those identifying as "conservative" on a 5-point scale ranging from "very conservative" to "very liberal."

10%, including 26% of those identifying as "very conservative," say border security is their top issue.

9 other issues are all in single digits:
  • 8%: Crime
  • 7%: Climate Change
  • 5%: Election Integrity
  • 4%: Voting Rights
  • 3%: COVID-19
  • 3%: Guns
  • 3%: Housing Prices
  • 2%: Homelessness
  • 1%: Foreign Policy
51% say they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports federal restrictions on abortion, including 87% of liberals, 73% of Democrats, and 55% of women. 22% would be more likely to vote for such a candidate, including 60% of very conservative voters and 38% of Republicans. 20% say it makes no difference to them, including 31% of Republicans and 28% of independents.

55% say the current Supreme Court of the United States is out of touch with the values and beliefs of most Americans; 24% say the Court is in touch. 61% of very conservative adults – and no more than 43% of any other group – say the Court is in touch. Republicans are evenly split, with 40% saying the Supreme Court is in touch, 40% saying it is out of touch.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 875 Washington State adults online 10/14/22 through 10/19/22, using sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Of the adults, 719 were identified as being registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 589 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November election and were asked the questions about the most important issue and voting for a candidate who supports federal abortion restrictions. All adults were asked the question about the Supreme Court. The pool of adult survey respondents was weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership.
