In Indiana, Incumbent Dem Donnelly One Whisker Ahead of GOP Challenger Braun; US Senate Contest is Jump Ball Heading Into Home Stretch:

Republican Mike Braun may flip Democrat Joe Donnelly's US Senate seat in Indiana, or freshman Donnelly may be elected to a 2nd term, according to SurveyUSA research conducted for the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Neither outcome would be surprising, given how closely matched the candidates are, yet how dramatically different their core constituencies are.

Donnelly, who at this hour has a nominal 1 percentage point advantage, 41% to 40%, well within the survey's range of possible errors, leads 44:1 among Democrats (including "Strong Democrats," where Donnelly leads Braun 97% to Zero), leads 42:1 among Indiana's African American voters, leads 16:1 among liberals (including "Strong Liberals"), leads 13:1 among voters who disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as President and leads 3:1 among Hispanics.

Braun, a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, leads 22:1 among Strong Republicans, 18:1 among Strong Conservatives and 13:1 among those who approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as President.

* 65% of those voting for the Democrat Donnelly say their support for the candidate is "strong."
* 65% of those voting for Republican Braun say their support for the candidate is "strong."

Braun leads by 8 points among all men and by 13 points among suburban men. Donnelly leads by 11 points among all women and by 13 points among suburban women. The combatants are within single digits in all regions of the state: in Greater Indianapolis, Donnelly leads by 5 points. In Northern IN, Donnelly leads by 4 points. In Southern IN, Braun leads by 6 points. In Central IN, Braun leads by 2 points. In urban parts of the state, Donnelly runs up the score, 59% to 24%.

Libertarian Lucy Brenton gets 8% of the vote today, and one can argue persuasively that Brenton is siphoning votes from both major-party candidates. Among men, Brenton is at 10%, suggesting she is taking votes from Braun. Among the youngest voters, Brenton is at 11%, suggesting she is taking votes from Donnelly. Among true independents (not including those who lean slightly left or right), who break 2:1 for Donnelly, Brenton is at 21%, finishing in 2nd place ahead of Braun. Among those who attend religious services regularly, where Braun leads Donnelly by 23 points, Brenton is at 11%, suggesting she is taking points from Braun. Among urban voters, where Donnelly leads by 35 points, Brenton is at 10%, suggesting she is nibbling support from Donnelly. Among suburban men, where Braun is up, Brenton is at 12%, siphoning from Braun.

Among voters who say that health care is the most important issue in how they vote in 2018, Donnelly leads Braun by 38 points. Among those who say jobs and the economy is most important, Braun leads Donnelly 2:1. Among those who say immigration is most important, Braun leads Donnelly 4:1.

Hoosiers are divided on whether it's more important for a politician to stand firm (48%), or to compromise (47%). By 3:2, voters say that raising tariffs hurts the economy more than it helps. Indiana Republicans say Republicans in Congress have not been close enough to Donald Trump, while Indiana Democrats say that Republicans in Congress have been too close to Trump. Indiana Republicans say that Democrats in Congress have obstructed President Trump, while Indiana Democrats say Democrats in Congress have struck the right balance between opposing Trump and being too close to Trump.

* 44% of registered voters approve of the job President Trump is doing; 46% disapprove.
* 23% of registered voters approve of the job the US Congress is doing; 56% disapprove.
* 44% approve of the job Governor Eric Holcomb is doing; 24% disapprove.

* 28% of registered voters statewide have a very favorable opinion of Mike Pence, 22% have a very favorable opinion of Trump, 13% have a very favorable opinion of Holcomb, 8% have a very favorable opinion of Paul Ryan, 4% have a very favorable opinion of Mitch McConnell, 3% have a very favorable opinion of Nancy Pelosi and 3% have a very favorable opinion of Chuck Schumer.

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,400 adults from the state of Indiana 10/12/18 through 10/16/18. Of the adults, 1,048 are registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 816 individuals who are likely to return a ballot before the 11/06/18 deadline. This research was conducted online.
